Bookmaking with the Masked Pixie - Part 4: The Scroll

This is the fourth post in a series of instructions about making books. Check out Part 1: The Basic Book, Part 2: The Bow Book, and Part 3: The Accordion Book. Come back later to see Part 5.

This scroll was created in the Byzantine Empire during the 10th century.

Scrolls are a very old kind of book. Many scrolls were made in Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and China. Those old scrolls were made of papyrus and parchment, but you can make one now with paper and cardboard.
Materials
  • paper
  • cardboard tube (you can get these from rolls of paper towels, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, or wax paper)
  • clear tape
  • glue
  • art supplies to illustrate your pages
Procedures
Make your pages

Write and illustrate your story.

Attach your pages to the cardboard tube with tape or glue
Roll up our scroll and you're all done!

Extra options
The Double Tube Scroll
Why are two tubes better than one? When you unroll the paper from the first tube, it can get wrinkled. If you have another tube to wrap the paper around as you unroll it, the paper will stay nice and neat.
First, tape or glue one end of your paper to one cardboard tube. Then, tape or glue the other end of your paper to the other cardboard tube. Next, roll the paper around the tubes.

The Mini Scroll and the Mega Scroll
You can make a small scroll with a toilet paper tube or you can make a big scroll with a wrapping paper tube.

The Ancient Scroll
There are a few things you can do to your paper to make your scroll look ancient. You can crumple up the paper and smooth it out. The wrinkles will make the paper look old and worn. You can also rip the edges of the paper so it will look like it is decaying with age. Paper turns yellow and brown as it gets older. You can use yellow or brown paper or you can stain regular white paper with used tea bags or brown watercolor paint.
